A Happy Life

Mindful Meditation- Unit 7 Blog

This was a very long and tedious week, as we lead up to the final weeks of the term, more demands are put on us as students to prove what we have learned.  For some students the ability to prove what our brains have obtained may not be measured in a test, nor written in a paper, it must be extrapolated by some other means.  With this process of purging information that has been processed, digested, and now regurgitated, one must meditate the mind back into the original state of being.  Being is not self inflicted but rather a peace of uninterrupted space that belongs to you without interference.  This allows for a greater peace of the whole you, the peace that allows others to ask, “Are you tuning me out”, while you answer “No, I am tuning me in”.  You are physically well because your mind only harnesses positive emotion; you have purged the negative thoughts and allowed you to move forward.
The saying “One can not lead another where one has not yet gone himself”, simply states that you can not teach Integral Health, if you are unhealthy in your mind, spirit, and body.  I can not speak to drug addiction, because I know not of it.  You can not teach or tell a patient about something you know nothing of first hand, it is not best practice, and yes we are obligate to client to be psychologically, physically and spiritually sound.  It is imperative that we practice what we preach; the sick under no circumstance can heal the sick.  It is our inherit duty to be well in every facet of life, seek ye and it shall be answered.  Namaste

  1. Hello Hello :),
Oh, I agree that as the weeks wind down and the term begins its ending, we start to the feel the pressure of utilizing what we learned to prove our knowledge through our work. I like how you mentioned that being is a peace of uninterrupted space that belongs to us without interference. That is how it should be. Good post!

  2. Hey Girl
There is an unspoken issue in the recovery realm (at least the fellowship I have been a part of) that those with only a didactic knowledge of addiction cannot relate to the addict. This is simply because they have not experienced the depths of addiction themselves; I am one that subscribes to this philosophy however I will not be exclusive in my thinking that only one model of recovery exists. So in being mindful in my practice I must consider the other side of the fence and the possibility that the grass may be greener as it might guide my decision making process. And I wonder why the ladies love diamonds so much!
    Peace
    Vinnie

  3. OH I hear you here. My last term at Kaplan before my Bachelor's degree is complete is spelled out here in your post :) It was very insightful. Your post, I mean. You are so right; we cannot teach things we do not know, otherwise we are keeping people from learning things like learning how to flourish- for real. Instead of spreading peace, it spreads a kind of ignorance. The kind where we put a sort of shade over someone else's eyes. How can they know to flourish if we ourselves do not even know, and yet we try to put this lesson onto them? Great post!

  4. Excellent post, it is amazing how fast the weeks fly by. I agree in what you say about the quote, we have to be able to practice what we preach so to speak to better give us credibility from our clients. Individuals are going to want advice from people who have gone through what they are trying to help those with. If it is a personal trainer, the client is going to want their trainer to be fit rather than severely overweight. It is very important in the health and wellness field to have experiences in those areas.

  5. Hang in there, we are almost done! At least for this term, I still have 4 to go before I graduate with my BS. I think this class has been very enlightening and it has definitely made me really sit back and evaluate this whole integral health philosophy. When we are in a place of human flourishing, we will be at peace with ourselves and the world around us. I can only hope to achieve this before I die and to be able to pass this on to my children and those I come in contact with each and every day!

  6. You definitely just described my thoughts exactly as we round out these last couple of weeks in this term. My brain feels like it's overflowing with so much information and so much to do and not enough time nor the brainpower to do it in. However, we must carry on... I see the finish line and it's not too far out! I agree that you can't preach what you don't practice or what you haven't lived already. I have a close friend who has cancer and has been going thru chemo- I can't relate to how she feels because I haven't been in her shoes but I can help her to feel comfort the best that I know how and it's not always what she wants. Did that even make sense?

  7. I firmly believe that one must practice what they preach. I do like Vinnie's reference to a drug and alcohol counselor only holding didactic knowledge and not first hand experience would put them in a predicament to not be truly an effective counselor because they haven't actually gone through addiction themselves. Though on the other hand, you may have someone like myself that never suffered from a chemical dependency per say but I was the child of someone who did and the lasting impression it left me can serve a powerful testimony of how chemical dependency can not only damage the individual who suffers from an addition but those who are close to them.

  8. Hi there,
I would have to agree that this week was one that seems extra-long. Funny how some of the events and readings from this class have had distinct correlations to relationships in my life - coincidence? Perhaps it is just the awareness that has resulted from these practices….or I just have a pain in the butt sister.  I am a firm believer that we have to practice what we preach. Of course, I don’t feel that we all have to had experienced the same situations in order understand where a person who has is coming from – that would be virtually impossible, but to be open to the situations that these people have been in and have an empathetic heart is a necessity.

  9. Wow, that was a powerful statement. “Are you tuning me out”, while you answer “No, I am tuning me in”. You are physically well because your mind only harnesses positive emotion; you have purged the negative thoughts and allowed you to move forward. This is the way you have to be if you want to move forward in your life. It does no good to sit around and think ill thoughts, they will only hold you back.
